Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness von Joseph Conrad

Rezension:
"I was on the point of crying at her, 'Don't you hear them?' The dusk was repeating them in a persistent whisper all around us, in a whisper that seemed to swell menacingly like the first whisper of a rising wind. 'The horror! The horror!'"

English:

First of all, I want to quickly mention that I've read this book for university. Furthermore, I only had one week to read this and it was a week I had *so* many other things to do, which is why I didn't really try looking out for details within the narration I might like - at least not after I'd discovered that I don't really care for this book. So, yeah, full disclosure, this is going to be a rather superficial, quick review.

I was only a couple of pages in (luckily the book isn't long) when I realised that Heart of Darkness might be a good book but it's just not my thing. It's not the writing style or the "traditional" cultural norms that annoyed me (I'm totally fine with the style and I've read enough classics that I've learnt how to think critically of the cultural norms depicted without hating the book), actually, nothing annoyed me at all (except for maybe Kurtz's wife, but then again she belongs to the "traditional cultural norms depicted"-category). I just don't care about it. The story is kind of slow and the atmosphere just did nothing for me (though I realised that Conrad was trying to create some kind of atmosphere). Honestly, I gulped this book down just to know what happened and to be able to talk about it. It was a "clean read" - as if reading the summary of something.

Still, even though I'm obviously lacking any kind of attachment or care or emotion in general, I do realise why this book is important for literature studies. It certainly portrays some of the crucial aspects we've been learning about but, though I do see that, it doesn't really change my feelings (or lack thereof) towards the book. It is interesting in a scientific way, but outside of that realm it's really something I don't care about.

Bewertung:
